Tummy Tuck Q & A

What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that slims and restores the muscle tone to your abdomen. Tummy tucks aren’t weight loss surgeries. Instead, the procedure tightens muscles that have become weakened, removes excess fat, and eliminates sagging or loose skin.

During a tummy tuck, Dr. Ditto makes an incision in your abdomen, removes excess skin and fat, and tightens the piece of connective tissue that’s attached to your abdominal muscles. Dr. Ditto often combines the tummy tuck with liposuction for the best-contoured results.

Dr. Ditto performs several types of tummy tucks, including:

  • Panniculectomy
  • Fleur de Lis Tummy Tuck
  • Classic or “full” tummy tuck for the upper and lower abdomen
  • Extended tummy tuck for the upper and lower abdomen, plus the flanks
  • Mini-tummy tuck for the lower abdomen
  • Reverse tummy tuck for the upper abdomen

Each type of tummy tuck targets a specific area of concern and tightens and smoothes your problem areas to create a better-looking abdomen.

Who should have tummy tuck surgery?

You may be a candidate for tummy tuck surgery if you have a positive body image, stable weight, and are physically healthy. You may also be a candidate if you fit the following criteria:

  • You have excess skin that sags and causes functional or cosmetic concerns
  • You have a weak lower abdominal wall
  • Liposuction has been ineffective
  • You have retracted or deforming scarring as the result of a C-section

You may not be a good candidate to receive a tummy tuck if you have a chronic health condition like diabetes or heart disease which is poorly controlled, you’re morbidly obese, or you want to get pregnant in the future.

What results can be expected after a tummy tuck surgery?

Swelling and moderate pain commonly occur after tummy tuck surgeries. Dr. Ditto may leave drains in place that allow fluid to flow out of the body after your procedure. If so, Dr. Ditto will show you how to empty and care for them.

You also need to take extra care not to reopen the wound with sudden movements, stress on the affected area, or by bending at the waist. You may also be placed on antibiotics to prevent infection.  This will all be discussed in detail prior to surgery.

Results typically appear immediately and continue to improve for the first six months as swelling subsides. As your abdomen heals and swelling subsides, you should notice a sleeker and more contoured appearance. Future pregnancies or repeated cycles of weight gain and weight loss may alter the outcome of your tummy tuck.  All attempts are made to eliminate all stretch marks but this is not always possible, although they will be significantly decreased.
