Diet Before Weight Loss Surgery

Why Do I Need to Lose Weight Before My Bariatric Surgery?

Patients often wonder if the goal of bariatric surgery is to help them lose weight, why they need to lose any before they undergo the surgery.

The goal of dieting before weight loss surgery is shrink your liver and spleen, which studies have shown can result in reduced operating time, reduce the risk of complications, and even reduce the time for you to stay in the hospital.

Because the liver lies over the area of the stomach where we are doing most of your surgery, proper weight loss according to Dr. Ditto’s instructions prior to your bariatric surgery is important for both your bariatric surgery and your weight loss recovery.

Compliance with your preoperative weight loss plan is correlated with successful weight loss following surgery.

What Kind of Diet Will I Follow Before My Bariatric Surgery?

Dr. Ditto generally requires a high protein, low-calorie diet prior to bariatric surgery.  This diet will help shrink the liver, reduce surgical risks, and assist in a faster recovery for you. He generally recommends the pre-bariatric surgery “Liquids and One Light Meal” Plan.

Dr. Ditto will discuss with you your specific weight loss goals prior to your bariatric surgery as well as a suggested diet plan for you to follow.  Most patients are advised to follow the “Liquids and One Light Meal,” meaning that patients are instructed to drink 2-3 protein shakes per day and eat 1 light meal.  Patients are advised to abstain from eating starchy vegetables and simple carbohydrates, but are permitted to eat all the sugar-free popsicles, sugar-free Jell-O, or broth (reduced sodium) that you would like.  Patients are also instructed to begin proper hydration and consume at least 64 ounces of fluids per day.

It is important to remember that Weight Loss Surgery is a lifelong commitment.  Talk to your friends and family to help them understand the process and how to be supportive of the lifestyle changes you will make both before and after your bariatric surgery.  Dr. Ditto is committed to your journey and will be there every step of the way!  Get ready to Live Your Best Life with Ditto Surgical!
